Over the summer months, there is a chore that continually falls onto my shoulders. It’s one that I don’t usually look forward to, so I don’t often think about it…
Unless I’m reminded of it.
You know that whole idea of out of sight, out of mind? Yeah, that usually works for me for a little while. But I’m reminded again that I have to mow the yard. It’s just something that needs to be done for the upkeep of my yard. And my dogs appreciate it too!
In my spiritual walk, there are things that the Holy Spirit reminds me of that need to be done, but I don’t look forward to them. And while I try the out-of-sight-out-of-mind approach, the Holy Spirit does a fantastic job of keeping these things front of mind.
Here’s a great example. Since 2019, there was someone that I needed to contact and ask forgiveness for something I did. But I didn’t think it was a big deal. And it was sort of awkward. So, I’d rationalize that it was my overactive consciousness at work again, and I’d already asked for God’s forgiveness. So everything was good…right?
Nope. Prayer time became increasingly cloudy and unclear. What was clear was the Holy Spirit reminding me gently that I still needed to take care of this thing. It was a nudge, a reminder that pricked my conscience repeatedly and consistently. Never clamoring, but even toned.
Believe it or not, this went on for almost four years.
I finally reached a place where I realized that if I wanted to continue growing, I had to deal with this issue. If I’d be referring to my backyard as the metaphor, the grass had grown to critical mass, and the mower had to emerge. And I had to reach out and ask for forgiveness. So I did.
There are things that the Holy Spirit will continually bring to mind that He wants us to take action on. It might not be seeking forgiveness like in my case. It may be that there’s a task that really needs doing that you keep putting off. You don’t want to think about it, or it’s difficult, or it’s gonna require a change, such as letting go or accepting responsibility.
What’s that one task?
Or maybe it’s something the Holy Spirit has been reminding you to stop doing or start doing.
What’s that one thing?
Perhaps the Holy Spirit has been continually bringing someone to mind that He wants you to reach out to. But it’s an awkward situation. Uncomfortable. And you’ve put it off for a while.
Who’s that person?
You know, I had made my situation a huge deal. But it wasn’t. In fact, it was over in about 3 minutes. That’s it. I would have taken care of it long before if I’d known that! Unfortunately, not all work out so nicely. Some take work and breaking down pride. But when it’s all done, they all end in peace between you and the Holy Spirit. And that’s worth facing whatever it is He’s reminding you of.
And you’re not alone. He wants to help you. Trust Him to do so. He’s assigned to come alongside you to do just that.
You are loved!
